An Open Letter to Dan Metz

I just received an email from gamestop.com telling me that online Wii preorders will begin on Thursday. They didn't give an exact time, just said it would be Thursday evening. It's a $700 bundle with some unspecified games and accessories (I'd guess three controllers, three games, a couple of those retro controllers, maybe some virtual console points).

At this point, I think I'm going to just hold off and try to walk in and grab one on Sunday. We should ask my local Best Buy when they're opening, as according to various Wii inventory trackers they're already slated to receive 98 units (the Target next door is getting like 30 too). Compared to the dozen-or-so Xbox 360s these places got I expect the Wii's will be so plentiful that they will begin to act as a liquid and people will actually drown in them.

Besides, if we get up early, go to Best Buy and discover they're sold out, then we can come home and drown our sorrow in Guitar Hero 2 and McDonald's breakfast sandwiches.

I'm with you - I would rather specify where my extra $450 go. Let's just plan on getting it either on midnight Saturday or early on Sunday.

I keep seeing things like this video where instead of telling us how customers will be able to get Wiis, Nintendo keeps warning how the Wii will be hard to find.

From what I recall, when Sony or Microsoft have launched consoles in the past they always talk about how many they're making, and how people will be able to get one, etc, etc. This makes me think Nintendo is trying to drum up demand for a product that will be very plentiful (fingers crossed)

P.S. Reggie (Nintendo big wig) is the best PR guy I've ever seen.
